📢 Call to Action! 📢

Good afternoon all,

I hope this message finds you as well as possible during such chaotic and difficult times.
Today, I feel compelled to address a matter that weighs heavily on my heart and, undoubtedly, yours as well.
Recent decisions regarding staffing and hours have left many of us feeling frustrated and disheartened. I want to express my deep disappointment with the way our team and its contributions have been valued. The cutting of hours and roles are not just numbers on a spreadsheet, but they represent real people – dedicated and talented employees who have poured their energy, time, and passion into making our Division what it is today.
It is disconcerting to witness decisions made by our employer that do not honour the loyalty and hard work that our employees have shown. Unfortunately, as the employer, they have the legal right to change support staff allocations, hours of work, schedules, create and phase out job classifications, as well as direct transfers. That said, we aren’t completely helpless in this. We all have the ability as employees, as parents, and as community members to voice our concerns.
As a team, I encourage you to share your thoughts and feelings during this challenging time. Your voices matter, and it is important that we remain committed to one another. I am here to listen and advocate on your behalf, as every one of you deserves a workplace that respects your contribution and sustains your well-being.
With that in mind, I need your help. Mine is one voice. If there’s anything we learned during the strike, it’s that when we fight together, we win. I urge you all to contact the powers that be; the Superintendents and Trustees at Foothills School Division, parents, members of the community, and whomever else you think might have an interest in what meager support could mean for students.

Teacher Support – Do’s and Don’ts

Teacher Support – Do’s and Don’ts

These education support workers work closely with teachers, and we are natural allies in their struggle to achieve a fair negotiated agreement. It is hardly surprising, then, that teachers are asking how we can show solidarity with our coworkers even as teachers in affected schools are having to manage the impact of the strike on their classrooms and on the work they are required to do.

A letter to parents

CUPE has penned a letter to the parents of our students and shared it on Support Education Workers media platforms.

Education Support Workers have been on the front lines, seeing the impacts of underfunding on student success and classroom conditions. Due to provincial education funding not keeping up with student enrolment growth, Alberta students are now the lowest funded in the country. The consequences of these shortfalls are getting worse. Trying to support more students, with complex needs, in fewer hours has led to students falling through the cracks.

NDP MLAs show their support for CUPE workers around the province

Many of our members have been diligently writing emails to MLAs around Alberta and in their own ridings with hopes to gain support and over rule the UCP’s ridiculous mandate of a maximum 3% wage cap. We have received some responses with great positivity, sharing that there are many MLAs that join CUPE lines and stand up for us un the legislature.

No one should have to choose between feeding their families and doing the job they love, and no child should suffer because the UCP government refuses to invest properly in public education.

The Alberta NDP will continue to stand with you, fight for better education funding, and push for real solutions to ensure that Education Assistants and all school staff receive the respect and support they deserve.
